The Gasabo Intermediate Court ruled today that Capt. (RTD) David Kabuye be remanded into custody for 30 days pending his trial. He was arraigned yesterday before the Court for a pre-trial hearing. He is charged with the illegal possession of a firearm. Prosecutor Boniface Budengeri requested the court to remand Kabuye for 30 days on the grounds that he is accused of committing a serious offence and is likely to escape justice if granted bail. Kabuye told the presiding judge that he would not flee and also offered his wife, Rose Kabuye, the former director of state protocol, who was also in attendance, and his brother and sister as sureties. The presiding judge agreed with Prosecution, denying him bail. “David Kabuye told the court that he is a businessman who frequently travel so there is no proof that he would be available any time the judiciary wants him. It is on this note that he should be remanded to custody for 30 days, the judge ruled. Kabuyes lawyer, Godfrey Butare, said that he is surprised about the court decision, stating that his client seeks permission from the commander of the reserve force before travelling.
